A convenient dishwasher is one that is easy to load and unload, requires little cleaning or care, and is built for trouble-free operation.
Loading and Unloading. Whether a dishwasher is easy or hard to load and unload depends upon the accessibility of the racks and their design. Both differ among brands of dishwashers.
Top-loading portables have top racks that can either be lifted out or are attached to the lid so that they rise when the lid is opened. Either arrangement gives access to the bottom racks. In some models, both top and bottom racks can be removed so you can load them at a table and unload them at a storage space. Front-loading portables have the lower rack mounted oil small wheels so that it can be rolled out onto the door for loading and unloading. Circular upper racks can be pulled part way out and rotated; rectangular upper racks can be pulled out far enough for loading. In some models, one or both of the racks can be removed.
Built-in and convertible dishwashers open from the front and have racks similar to those in front-loading portables. Some dishwasher racks adjust up or down to make room for larger top or bottom loads. This flexibility is useful if you want to wash large serving plates or extra-tall glasses.
Rack design. All dishwasher racks have vinyl-covered metal pins to hold dishes in place. In some models, the pins can be turned upright, horizontal, or at an angle to accommodate dishes of unusual size or shape. Baskets for spoons, knives, and forks are removable from most dishwashers; some baskets have covers to prevent small pieces from being forced out by spraying water.
Tubs. The tub of any dishwasher that is functioning properly will generally be kept clean by the detergent solution and water sprayed about during washes and rinses. But the three materials commonly used in tubs vinyl, porcelain, and stainless somewhat in performance.
Vinyl tub coating is similar to the material used on dishwasher racks. It provides a cushion if something is dropped in the tub, but it is not as resistant to stains and scratches as porcelain or stainless steel. If the vinyl is cut, it should be repaired immediately or the tub may rust and ultimately leak. Vinyl is relatively inexpensive to repair. Porcelain tub coating is a hard, glassy material fused onto steel. It is durable and resistant to stains and scratches. Porcelain sometimes chips. Damage that exposes the underlying steel is difficult but possible to repair. With time, porcelain may loose its glassy surface and some of its stain resistance.
