. If a gas dryer fails for other in a gas-related reason and you insist on making repairs yourself, or for some reason the gas company won't do the work, make sure that you shut off the gas supply as well as the electricity before proceeding. Even if the trouble is not gas-related, you should first examine the setup with the idea that you may have to maneuver the dryer to get it into a better position for repair. Carelessness, such as moving the dryer without making certain that the gas feed line has sufficient room for movement, can cause a gas-line rupture.
The gas feed line to the dryer should have a valve on it. Turn this valve to shut off the gas supply to the dryer. If the gas feed line has to be disconnected so the dryer can be moved, use a wrench to unscrew the large coupling nut.
In reassembling a gas feed line, check for a gas leak coming from around the coupling nut after you have tightened it. Spread soapy water around the nut with a paint brush or some such applicator and watch to see if there is bubbling action in any spot. Bubbling signifies a leak. Using your nose to sniff around the coupling nut may also reveal a leak.
. Don't forget to disconnect the line cord from an electric dryer, consult the instructions that came with the appliance to determine if the unit requires any other servicing.
A buildup of lint probably causes more problems than do actual parts failures. If a dryer doesn't dry clothes fully or if the unit builds up excessive heat, you should clean out not only the lint trap, but also the exhaust vent pipes.
After several years of operation, lint can clog up vent pipes, making it difficult for the dryer to "breathe." If the dryer is equipped with metal vent pipes, take them apart and clean them with a long brush or a vacuum cleaner attachment. If you have plastic vent tubing, which is relatively inexpensive, you may want to replace it every few years.
3. A leak in the venting system can cause insufficient drying and may also create a fire hazard in your laundry room. For example, if the sections of metal vent pipe are not sealed at the joints, lint and moist air can blow into the room. Lint is flammable.
All joints should be sealed with duct tape.
Check where the vent pipe comes through the outside wall. The opening should be equipped with a draft cover to keep wind from blowing back into the dryer. Drafts can cause the flame of a gas dryer to blow out. They also reduce drying efficiency.
