Washer Components

Washer motor-driven pump.

Check with friends and neighbors about a dealer's reputation for service before you buy washer. Service should be quick, reliable, and as inexpensive as possible.
In general, complicated washers with many controls break down more frequently and are more expensive to repair than simple washers. Breakdowns on non-automatics are infrequent and are usually a matter of a faulty motor or a broken switch. Automatic washers are usually easier and less expensive to service if they have removable panels that permit quick access to motors and pumps. Ask your salesman about ease of servicing the model you are considering. Most washers have permanently lubricated motors. But, if periodic lubrication is required, find out if the lubrication points are easily accessible for home servicing. Consult the manufacturer's literature.

If your washer does break down, check some basic points yourself before you call for service. Forty percent of service calls are about simple matters.
If your washer will not run:
1.         Fully depress the control button or completely turn the dial.
2.         Firmly insert the electric plug into the outlet.
3.         See if a fuse is blown or a circuit breaker tripped.
4.         Balance the load.
5.         Decrease the load in the tub.
If you are not getting enough water, or enough hot water:
1.         See that hoses are attached to the right faucets.
2.         Turn both faucets on fully.
3.         Unkink the intake hose.
4.         Look at your home water heater thermostat setting. It should be about 160° Fahrenheit.
5.         See if the water pressure is low in the house.
6.         See if hoses are connected tightly to faucets.
7.         Clean the screens in the faucet ends of the intake hoses.
If the water does not empty properly:
1.         See if the lint drain is clogged.
2.         Unkink the drainage hose.
3.         Check that the drain hose is correctly inserted into the drain pipe.
